A standard oil seal consists of an outer circular metal disk with an inner flexible rubber which is affixed to the metal during vulcanization. The bonded seal has no loose parts to allow leakage of oil or ingress of any contaminants. This kind of seal is more accurate, and can easily be fitted into a smaller space. An example is shown in Figure 2.9.
Oil seals are protective elements. They prevent the mixing of water and lubricants within a machine, thereby ensuring optimal machine functionality. Also, oil seals help to prevent lubricant leakage at high pressure like when the machine is working at an extremely high rate. For more severe oil-seal service at temperatures of 160°C (320°F) or higher for extended periods, more resistant fluoroelastomer compositions are required for long service life. High-fluorine VDF/PMVE/TFE elastomers, along with TFE/olefin FEPM elastomers, are much less susceptible to attack by oil additives. TFE/P fluoroelastomers have the requisite chemical resistance, but have low fluorine content, leading to relatively high swell and to soft vulcanizates with lower wear resistance than desired.
