Oil seals are always exposed to a lot of chemicals, both mild and harsh chemicals. The seals react by showing some signs like cracks, blisters, and discoloration especially when the chemical is harsh. This clearly shows that the chemical is not compatible with the seal, which goes as far as affecting its cross-link density (increase or decrease). When the cross-link density increases, the seal material becomes harder, but when it decreases, the seal material becomes softer.

Minor lip The minor lip prevents the entry of dust and contaminants from outside.
Lubricant can be retained in the space between the main lip and the minor lip.

How does an Oil Seal Work

There are different types of spark plugs available on the market, each designed for specific engine types and operating conditions. The most common types are copper, platinum, and iridium spark plugs. Copper spark plugs are the most affordable and provide good performance for everyday driving. Platinum spark plugs offer better longevity and performance, while iridium spark plugs are the most durable and provide the best spark performance.

Most oil seals consist of some basic elements that configure their structure, such as the sealing element, the metal case, and the spring:

The basic principle of sealing is straightforward – the flexible lip is held against the rotating part (usually the shaft) whilst the casing (or O.D.) is pressed into the housing or bore and holds the seal in place. The sealing lip needs some form of lubrication to avoid overheating and is usually energized by means of a garter spring.
